The Stones. In my last studio entry to talked about the river stones I had been wrapping in steel. I got bigger stones and began the fabrication process of drilling and heating. I would drill the stones then insert varying sizes of round stock into the stone. I would then heat the metal and slowly warp the stone. This is an extremely challenging process. With the thicker gauged steels (5/8", 3/4", ect.) it is very difficult to get the steel to a mailable temperature. Its doable, just requires a LOT of heat which would eventually lead to the demise of this way of working. The river stones I was working with turned out to be rather heat sensitive. Often half way through a piece, the stone would crack in half and the sculpture be ruined. Thus only a few of the pieces materialized into complete finished works. Below are some images of the lone survivors.
